A study published this month in the New England Journal of Medicine proves through a large clinical trial that treating high blood pressure—even mild cases—during pregnancy is safe and beneficial for both mother and developing baby. Ochsner Health was a site since 2014 for the study, which was led by University of Alabama at Birmingham.

After multiple postponements due to COVID-19, the Foundation for Woman’s hosted its popular BUST Breast Cancer event on March 30. Sixteen breast cancer survivors walked the runway modeling bras designed and decorated by local artists during a fashion show at L’Auberge Baton Rouge.

To celebrate Women’s Health Month, Cardiovascular Institute of the South (CIS) is hosting a free women’s educational social on May 26 from 6-8 p.m. at its clinic located at 8401 Picardy Avenue.

This free event will include a panel of CIS providers and wellness experts, a Q&A session, heart-healthy appetizers, wine, games, door prizes, and more. The goal of the social is for women to be informed of the unique heart disease risk factors and symptoms in women. Heart disease is the number one cause of death in women—more than all forms of cancer combined.

Ochsner Baton Rouge electrophysiologist Freddy Abi-Samra, MD, has successfully completed a  heart pacemaker procedure in a clinical trial involving a new technology that could make pacemaker surgery available to patients who may not benefit from traditional technology. This first-of-its-kind system is a leadless device that is implanted in the left ventricle of the heart to enable biventricular pacing without the need to attach wires to the heart muscles.

The Louisiana Department of Health (LDH)’s Office of Behavioral Health (OBH) is expanding services to Louisiana Medicaid members experiencing a mental health crisis with the phased implementation of a comprehensive crisis system of care, a critical goal identified in LDH’s Fiscal Year 2022 Business Plan. These services are directly correlated to LDH’s DOJ Agreement, and are critical to LDH’s compliance with the Agreement.
