Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital announced Brian Cordasco as its new vice president of hospital and clinic operations. 

Cordasco previously served as senior director for Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Health, where he focused largely on general and specialty pediatric operations. In his new role, Cordasco will continue to support Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Health physician practices and will now oversee the hospital operations for the Children’s Hospital.

Karalyn R. Bentley, MD, a board-certified general surgeon, recently joined Baton Rouge General’s Advanced Robotics Institute. Bentley minimally invasive robotic techniques for hernia and abdominal wall reconstruction, diseases of the esophagus and stomach, gastroesophageal reflux disease, and colon and endocrine surgery. In addition to treating various types of cancer, Bentley specializes in bariatric surgery.

At the American Ambulance Association’s annual conference and awards ceremony, Acadian Ambulance Chairman and CEO Richard Zuschlag was presented with the J. Walter Schaefer Award. The Schaefer Award is given annually to an individual whose work in EMS has contributed positively to the advancement of the industry as a whole.

Louisiana has officially surpassed 18,000 COVID-19 deaths since the state recorded its first COVID-19 death on March 14, 2020. The Louisiana Department of Health reported 18,009 people have died in its COVID-19 data update.

COVID-19, which has claimed more than one million American lives since the start of the pandemic, was the leading cause of death in the United States in 2020 and 2021, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). In Louisiana, COVID-19 has been the third-leading cause of death since 2020, behind only heart disease and cancer.
