The NeuroMedical Center announced that Ashok Reddy Polu, MD, has joined the Neurology Department as its second full-time neurohospitalist. Along with advanced training in stroke and neurological conditions, Polu brings a specialized understanding of caring for patients in the hospital setting. Polu will officially begin seeing patients at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge alongside Gary J. Walker, MD, in September 2021.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the first COVID-19 vaccine. The vaccine has been known as the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine, and will now be marketed as Comirnaty (koe-mir’-na-tee), for the prevention of COVID-19 disease in individuals 16 years of age and older. The vaccine also continues to be available under emergency use authorization (EUA), including for individuals 12-15 years of age and for the administration of a third dose in certain immunocompromised individuals.

The NeuroMedical Center announced that Lee Cox, RN, MBA, will serve as the new director of operations and Jessica Nabors as the human resources manager.

Cox comes to the The NeuroMedical Center with 16 years of both clinical and operational experience. Cox began his career working in the Emergency Room at Baton Rouge General.  He moved on to Cardiovascular Institute of the South where he worked as a registered nurse and later became the manager of the physician practice.  He has since worked at Ochsner and most recently at RKM Primary Care as the chief operating officer.

A $7.8 million estate gift from the late Charles M. Smith, MD, of Sulphur, La., will advance cancer treatment through a longstanding partnership with LSU and Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center that began in 1980. LSU and the Cancer Center leverage their education and research expertise through a joint medical and health physics program.

In response to demand for certified patient care technicians and certified nursing assistants, Ochsner Baton Rouge and Baton Rouge Community College have partnered to offer the Ochsner Patient Care Technician Customized Training Program.

This no-cost, eight-week course begins Oct. 25 and is open to all Greater Baton Rouge Area residents who are at least 18 years of age.

Applications open Aug. 25 and must be received by Sept 6.
