Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center announced that the organization’s expanded clinical research program and its full offering of genetic services are now available to residents across the region. Through Mary Bird Perkins’ enhanced clinical research, a greater number of trials are now available to more people. At the same time, the Cancer Center has opened a genetic services clinic—a much-needed asset that will help bolster cancer prevention and precision medicine strategies.

Ochsner Baton Rouge has welcomed several new medical staff members across various specialties.

Victoria Bourgeois, MD, and Nathan Sugarman, MD, have recently joined Baton Rouge General Physicians (BRGP), both located at the hospital’s Bluebonnet campus. Bourgeois will see patients at BRGP’s Obstetrics and Gynecology clinic, and Sugarman will take care of patients at BRGP’s Baton Rouge Family Medical Center.

Bourgeois earned a medical degree from American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine and completed a residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center at Woman’s Hospital in Baton Rouge.

The Woman’s Bariatric Surgery program was awarded the Bariatric Center of Excellence (COE) accreditation from the Clinical Sciences Institute of Optum for a third year.

Optum COE facilities are evaluated annually to ensure the highest quality and best value in bariatrics. As a re-designated COE, the Woman’s Bariatric Surgery Program was rigorously evaluated in volume of surgeries, number and experience of surgeons, complications and mortality rate, certifications, length of program existence, and multidisciplinary team.

Internationally-renowned orthopedic surgeon James Andrews, MD, will be the keynote speaker for Sideline Summer School, a free, Baton Rouge-based program offered by Ochsner Andrews Sports Medicine Institute that helps coaches, athletic trainers, and healthcare providers improve the safety of student-athletes and recognize sports-related injuries.

Andews’ former patients include Drew Brees, Michael Jordan, Jack Nicklaus, Bo Jackson, John Smoltz, Brett Favre, and Adrian Peterson. He will address Sideline Summer School attendees on the importance of athlete safety.
