BRG, Mary Bird Perkins Offer New Support Group for Local Breast Cancer Patients Baton Rouge General and Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center are offering a monthly breast can- cer support group, providing patients an addi- tional resource as they walk through their breast cancer journey. Breast cancer is the most fre- quently diagnosed cancer among women in Lou- isiana and the U.S., and Black women in the state are more likely to die from the disease. “After a breast cancer diagnosis, everything changes,” said Everett Bonner, MD, a surgical breast oncologist and medical director of BRG’s breast surgery program. “The support of family and friends is key for patients, but connecting with a group of peers who have gone through simi- lar experience can be an invaluable shoulder to lean on.” Led by a Mary Bird Perkins licensed social worker, the support group provides a space for patients to share their stories, seek emotional sup- port, find answers to their questions from clini- cal experts, and connect with a community who shares their challenges. The group will meet the second Wednesday of each month from 6-8 p.m. at BRG’s Bluebonnet campus. For more information, contact harmstrong@ marybird.com or (225) 215-0829. RSVPs recommended.
