Denzil Moraes, MD Denzil Moraes, MD, completed an internal medicine internship and residency at St. James Hospital (also in Dublin, Ireland) and Trinity Col- lege, as well as a second internal medicine resi- dency at the Boston University School of Medi- cine in Massachusetts. Moraes also completed fellowships in cardiovascular disease and inter- ventional cardiology. He is board-certified in interventional cardiology, cardiovascular disease, and internal medicine. Moraes visits patients at the Baton Rouge, Gonzales, and Denham Springs clinics. Angie Johnson, MD Angela Johnson, MD is the section chief of internal medicine for LSU-Baton Rouge, the asso- ciate program director for the LSU internal med- icine residency in Baton Rouge, and an associ- ate professor of clinical medicine. She earned a B.S. in Chemistry from Louisiana State Univer- sity, and her MD from LSUHSC in New Orleans. She is currently governor for the Louisiana Chap- ter of the American College of Physicians. John- son completed an internal medicine residency at LSUHSC in Baton Rouge, where she also served as a chief resident. Her clinical responsibilities include resident and medical student education through direct supervision of inpatient and out- patient care, and the presentation of various lec- tures and conferences. In addition to her clini- cal activities, she serves as the ambulatory clinic director for the primary care and medicine sub- specialty clinics for LSU Health at Our Lady of the Lake and serves on numerous hospital commit- tees and workgroups. She also plays an active role in state/regional natural disaster medical response efforts. Areas of research interest include heart failure quality improvement, patient education and resident QI/ patient safety engagement. Johnson is active in the American College of Physicians, both at the state and national level, and is a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society. Ashley Lucas, MD Ashley Lucas, MD, earned a medical degree from the University of Texas Medical School in Houston, Texas. She completed a pediatric resi- dency at Tulane, Ochsner, and University Hospi- tals in New Orleans, where she was named out- standing pediatrics resident in 1999. Lucas has special interests in early childhood, obesity pre- vention, breastfeeding, and ADHD. James Gardner, MD James “Jay” Gardner, MD, completed a med- ical degree and general pediatrics residency at LSU Health Sciences Center New Orleans. He stayed an additional year as co-chief resident of LSU Pediatrics. After a year of transport medi- cine, Gardner completed a three-year fellowship in pediatric endocrinology at UAB Health Sci- ences Center and Children’s Health of Alabama. His research focus was phosphate balance in chil- dren with growth hormone deficiency, investigat- ing new therapies for idiopathic advanced bone age, and for 18 months he was director of the Cystic Fibrosis Related Diabetes Clinic. Gardner returned to Louisiana to join Our Lady of the Lake Physician group and Children’s Health to begin his practice in pediatric endocrinology as section chief. From 2013 until 2020, Gardner was the Baton Rouge site director for the LSUHSC New Orleans third year medical student pediat- ric clerkship, and since 2012, he is director of the pediatric endocrine rotation for Our Lady of the Lake Pediatrics Residency Program. In the clinical realm, he enjoys all aspects of pediatric endocri- nology, but he has a particular interest in diabetes technology, genetic conditions in endocrinology, pediatric cancer’s long-term effects on endocrine systems, and metabolic bone diseases. BRG, Rouses Market TeamUp for Free Grocery Store Tours Baton Rouge General (BRG) has teamed up with Rouses Market to offer monthly grocery store tours designed to help attendees learn to choose fresh, healthy foods while also understanding nutrition labels. As part of the tour, BRG registered dietitians will share tips on how to meal plan, create a shopping list and prepare healthy dishes with custom reci- pes. While walking mostly the outer edges of the store on the dietitian-led tour, attendees will learn which brands tend to be better options and that not everything labeled “healthy” is good for you. The tours will be held monthly at three Rouses locations — Baton Rouge - Bluebonnet, Denham Springs - Juban Crossing, and Zachary - Church St./Hwy 64. They are free, but space is limited, and registration is required. NeuroMedical Center Adds Neurosurgeron Brandon Gaynor, MD The NeuroMedical Center announced the expansion of its practice in Louisiana with the association of Brandon Gaynor, MD, in the prac- tice of neurosurgery. He is a board-certified neurosurgeon who grad- uated from the combined six-year BA/MD pro- gram at the University of Missouri Kansas City in 2009. Gaynor completed a residency in neurologi- cal surgery in 2016 at University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital where he trained under the founders of The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis, a world-renowned center for spinal cord injury treatment and research. Gaynor specializes in adult neurosurgery includ- ing degenerative disease of the spine, spondylo- listhesis, spinal stenosis, herniated discs, sciatica, radiculopathy, cranial and spinal trauma, spine fracture, hydrocephalus, and peripheral nerve dis- orders. He also has extensive experience in the surgical management of brain conditions such as stroke, brain tumor, and subdural hematoma. A strong advocate of conservative care, Gaynor shares all care options with patients and employs minimally invasive surgical techniques whenever possible. “I look forward to serving the communities of Greater Baton Rouge.
