34 JUL / AUG 2022  I  HEALTHCARE JOURNAL OF BATON ROUGE   Healthcare Briefs push the boundaries of technology and innova- tion. FranU is one among eight institutions hon- ored with this award and will receive a $25,000 grant as a winner. FranU staff members Aubry Turner, MD, Mike Magee, and Craig White received the 2022 Impact Award during the annual Ellucian confer- ence in Denver, Colorado. “My heart is full when I see students fulfilling their callings, doing what they are passionate about and enjoying their careers, especially know- ing that I helped them get there in some capac- ity. Receiving the Ellucian Impact Award adds to that fulfillment because it shows that we are, first, equipping and preparing our next generation of servant leaders in a strategically good way. Sec- ond, it sheds light on our best practices so that others can use what we do and positively impact the students on their campus. Our wins come when we help others win, including students and fellow laborers,” said Turner. Ochsner Cancer Center – Baton Rouge Continues Expansion Project Ochsner Cancer Center – Baton Rouge is con- tinuing its $10 million, multi-year expansion. The project includes a new pharmacy for patients involved in research and clinical trials, along with additional room for exams and consultations. The pharmacy will benefit all Ochsner patients taking part in active studies, regardless of the research specialty. It also enables Ochsner to recruit patients for research projects at both its O’Neal campus and Ochsner Medical Complex – The Grove. The cancer center is part of Ochsner Cancer Institute, giving Baton Rouge patients local access to more clinical trials. The construction comes on the heels of the first wave of expansion of services completed in 2021, which also added space for patient treat- ment, as well as upgraded technology for posi- tron emission tomography scans, also known as PET or PET-CT scans. The latest project comprises 16,700 square feet and will provide an additional 30 patient exam rooms, three treatment rooms and two consulta- tion rooms. In addition to medical oncology, Och- sner Baton Rouge already offers local appoint- ments with physicians who specialize in radiation Louisiana Healthcare Connections Offers Tips for Healthcare Preparedness Louisiana’s hurricane season is here, June 1- Nov. 30, and Louisiana Healthcare Connections wants to remind all residents that hurricane pre- paredness also involves healthcare preparedness. Louisiana Healthcare Connections offers the fol- lowing tips to help everyone prepare for medical needs during hurricane season: • Have at least a seven-day supply of any medications you may be taking and backup medical items such as hearing aids, glasses, syringes, or contact lenses. • Keep copies of medical records in a safe, secure place. This should include medica- tion lists, health insurance information, and contact information for your healthcare pro- viders. Be sure to include information about any specific allergies or dietary restrictions and instructions for any medical equipment you may need. If you evacuate, take this information with you. • If you rely on a medical device that requires electricity, contact your local power com- pany and emergency authorities, and make certain that you have a way to power your device during a power outage. Make sure that a neighbor or loved one is aware of your situation and knows what to do in the event of a power outage. • If you have special health needs, talk to your healthcare provider about what to do in an emergency. Make sure your care instruc- tions are written down and take these with you if you need to evacuate. “At Louisiana Healthcare Connections, we take severe weather very seriously,” noted Louisiana Healthcare Connections CEO and Plan President, Jamie Schlottman. “In the event of impending severe events, we reach out to members with special healthcare needs to help prepare them in case they are affected, making sure they have medical equipment, prescriptions, access to phy- sicians, or other health needs.” Any Louisiana Healthcare Connections mem- bers who need help prior to a storm should call (866) 595-8133 (TTY: 711). In an actual emergency, always dial 9-1-1. Find additional health informa- tion at www.louisianahealthconnect.com . The $4 million Surgical Timing and Rehabilita- tion, or STaR, medical trial, will benefit the U.S. military, as well as athletes and people from all walks of life who suffer multiple-ligament knee injuries. Sponsored by the University of Pittsburg, The STaR Trial Network comprises 25 premier military and academic medical centers, and more than 50 of the top knee surgeons across the U.S. and Canada to determine the most beneficial treat- ment method. Jeremy Burnham, MD, medical director of the Ochsner Baton Rouge sports medicine program and Ochsner’s principal investigator for the STaR trial, said that multiple-ligament knee injuries require extremely specialized care and training. He compares the complexity to transplant surgery in that ideal outcomes depend on a highly spe- cialized team and coordinated care. “This study requires not only high-level treat- ment but also the ability to track outcomes, per- form high-level functional tests to assess patient progress and the use of stringent research pro- tocols to ensure the most accurate results possi- ble,” said Burnham.
