HEALTHCARE JOURNAL OF BATON ROUGE I  JAN / FEB 2021 15 needs and circumstances to best support our workforce. Finally, talent development is a challenge and an opportunity. We work to give team members timely feedback and offer train- ing opportunities. We also work to identify mentors to help people develop and find the right career path. We recently launched a career center to support our workforce. The career center is staffed with career coaches who coach, guide and provide resources to employees who want to continue to grow their career at Ochsner. As a large organi- zation, we have many professional oppor- tunities. We do everything possible to get talented, mission-driven employees into fulfilling roles. MOSBROKER 1. Compliance: Ensuring compliance with the myriad regulations today, it is critical to partner with competent out- sourced resources and have a collab- orative relationship with them. It does truly take a team of professionals to support the entire human resources function today. 2. Employee Relations: It is critical we help support our staff so that they can focus on providing the best care and service to our patients and physi- cians when they are here. Whether it’s with their work/life balance (now that some are facing being a virtual teacher at home or a primary caregiver to their family that has COVID-19) or stress management and healthy coping skills, this is absolutely necessary for us to get through these difficult times. We implemented an enhanced EAP for all employees and their family members. We’ve raised our paid time off limits so staff who are absolutely critical for our business but who can’t afford to take time off don’t lose their PTO benefit. Our leadership team treat their team members to lunch, we have monthly birthday cake and ice cream, and, per- haps the biggest gestures this year, our physicians chose to keep medical pre- miums the same for employees and we were still able to offer performance increases. 3. Recruitment/Retention: Sourcing experienced clinical team members continues to be a challenge. At Surgical Specialty Center of Baton Rouge, we offer the best of both worlds for those that want to work in a hospital setting but have flexibility for weekends and holidays off. Our physicians also want that same balance and only schedule necessary patient services after hours, weekends or holidays. We offer a very generous paid time off policy, two medical plan options, 401(k) match up to 3%, and annual performance awards as well as free coffee! HALPHEN First, ensuring we have the staff needed to run the hospital, now and in the future, with a specific focus on nurse recruiting. Second, partnering with lead- ers to understand the talent needs for the future of the hospital, and executing plans to address those needs. Finally, providing care and services that meet the diverse needs of all women and infants in our community. Editor What do you like most about your job? MANINT I love the people at BRG! My team is exceptional, and the BRG fam- ily is amazing. I’ve been here for 27, years and I can honestly say that no two days are the same. I love the challenge of being in healthcare human resources – it is not for the faint-hearted! SCHAFFER I love serving people and helping them reach their potential. I’m passionate about creating diverse and inspired cultural experiences in which people feel valued and a part of a bigger purpose. SEALS I’m so proud to work for an orga- nization that cares about its employees and invests in them as much as Ochsner does. At Ochsner, we provide resources that enable employees not only to do their best at work and grow professionally, but also provide programs that support men- tal health and emotional well-being. It is extremely rewarding to be part of helping others learn, grow and become the best ver- sions of themselves. This year, it’s been humbling to witness the work ethic, sacrifice and compassion that I see our team display on the front lines, in the office and from home. There have been significant challenges, but what we’ve seen time and time again is people stepping up. It’s an honor to support our teams. MOSBROKER I ammost proud to work for some of the best physicians in our area. Our hospital is fortunate to have some of the best leadership, team members and clini- cal professionals in Baton Rouge. I think the most rewarding aspect of my job is having the opportunity to be of service to them. Nowadays with advancements in technol- ogy, it seems we are growing further and further away from the human aspect of life. Connecting with people in a service minded attitude, whether it’s for the best day of their lives or dealing with the loss of a loved one, to be there with them and support their journey is an honor and keeps me grounded. HALPHEN I spent the first 30 years of my career in human resources in a variety of industries: banking, manufacturing and oil and gas. However, this is my first time work- ing in healthcare. My father was a pediatri- cian in New Iberia and my mother an RN, and it is with great satisfaction and pride to
