She has a love for the field and shows it through her dedi- cation to our students and program. As a student, she was the Valedictorian of her class and recipi- ent of the Trustee’s medal. As a faculty member, she went on to volunteer as the Faculty Repre- sentative for the Beta Epsilon Fraternity, the Rad Tech student organization. She determined to instill in students a sense of importance towards the needs of their community. Under her super- vision, the Fraternity was awarded the “Student Organization of the Year Award.” She is also ded- icated to the field of Radiology as an active mem- ber of multiple societal organizations. Rebecca has volunteered her time and effort to the Louisi- ana Society of Radiologic Technologists (LSRT) to host their annual convention and accompany the students to promote professionalism and activism in the field of Radiology. Shining Star Alumni Award — Katherine Mont- gomery Helo, CPNP, ASN (Class of 2009) , BSN (Class of 2010) Katherine works in pediatric hematology oncol- ogy at OLOL Regional Medical Center, where she realized her calling to work with pediatric patients in palliative care. In 2014, Katherine received the Master of Science in Nursing as a Nurse Practi- tioner from the University of South Alabama. She received board certification as a Pediatric Primary Care Nurse Practitioner in February 2015. Kather- ine returned to FranU to share her knowledge and experiences in pediatric palliative care with stu- dents enrolled in the senior nursing elective Palli- ative Care Nursing every semester until the course dissolved in 2017. Her stories of caring for children with cancer gave students a rare glimpse into the world of childhood cancer and palliative care of these children. After one of Katherine’s classroom visits, one student stated, “There are only a few moments of nursing school that I’ll never forget and this was one of them.” Rising Star Alumni Award — Travis Lambert (Class of 2016) Travis Lambert embodies the Universities core values as is evident by his work with IDEAL Pre- school on the island of Sint Maarten (Saint Mar- tin). Travis shows joyfulness of spirit and service by selflessly giving his time to assist IDEAL Pre- school recover after the Category 5 Hurricane Irma decimated the entire island in 2017. Travis himself, was displaced to the United Kingdom for the Fall semester while AUC rebuilt their campus. Through all the adversity, Travis displayed joyful- ness of spirit and an ability to adapt to the tough situations he found himself in – all while continu- ing to serve those most in need. Upon his return to AUC in January, Travis helped fundraise, orga- nized cleanup events, and restored IDEAL Pre- school’s backyard – complete with a new sensory space and garden. Travis received a Student of the Semester Award that came with $5000 in grant money, which he is using to continue his work at IDEAL Preschool. Our Lady of the Lake Physician GroupWelcomes Additional Cardiothoracic Surgeon Terry Stelly, MD, has joined Our Lady of the Lake Physician Group Cardiothoracic Surgery. Stelly joins cardiothoracic surgeons Dr. William M. Boedefeld II, Dr. Walter Bringaze III, and Dr. Swayze Rigby in providing advanced surgical care of diseases of the heart, lungs, and blood vessels. Stelly, originally from Lafayette, is returning to Louisiana after practicing a number of years in Mobile, Ala. He received a medical degree from Louisiana State University School of Medicine in New Orleans. He went on to complete a residency in general surgery at the University of South Ala- bama Medical Center in Mobile, followed by a fellowship in thoracic and cardiovascular surgery at the University of Louisville in Louisville, Ky. He is board-certified by the American Board of Tho- racic Surgery and is a member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS), Southern Thoracic Sur- gical Association (STSA), American College of Surgeons, Medical Society of Mobile County, and Medical Association of the State of Alabama. Jay Latour JoinsWoman’s as Laboratory Director Jay Latour has joined Woman’s Hospital as the new laboratory director, bringing more than 20 years of experience managing labs at hospitals across Louisiana. Most recently he served as the laboratory manager for Ochsner Medical Center Baton Rouge, where he improved lab processes and patient satisfaction scores in his tenure there. Latour graduated from LSU with a bachelor of science in medical technology before going on to receive a master’s in health services adminis- tration from the University of St. Francis in Joliet, Ill. He takes the reins from Brett Schelin, who will be retiring after more than 40 years of service at Woman’s Hospital. BRGHosts Free Lunch & Learn on Stubborn Sinus Infections Baton Rouge General hosted a Lunch and Learn event on sinusitis, or sinus infections, which affect more than 30 million adults in the U.S., especially in the South. “Symptoms from sinusitis like facial pain or pres- sure, congestion, runny nose, fever or discolored mucus typically last a few days, but for some peo- ple they can persist for weeks,” said Dr. Christian Hall, a board-certified ear, nose, and throat phy- sician specializing in rhinology at Sinus and Nasal Specialists of Louisiana. “At that point, we’ll have the conversation with a patient about how long is too long to deal with symptoms and begin look- ing at it as a chronic issue.” During the lunch and learn, Hall discussed the Terry Stelly, MD Jay Latour
