NeuroMedical Center Neurology Department Adds Stroke Specialist

The NeuroMedical Center announced that Ashok Reddy Polu, MD, has joined the Neurology Department as its second full-time neurohospitalist. Along with advanced training in stroke and neurological conditions, Polu brings a specialized understanding of caring for patients in the hospital setting. Polu will officially begin seeing patients at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge alongside Gary J. Walker, MD, in September 2021.

Polu obtained a medical degree from American International Medical University in Gros Islet, Saint Lucia. Relocating to the United States in 2015, Polu completed an internship in preliminary medicine at Presence Saint Joseph Hospital in Chicago, Ill. before completing a residency in neurology at the University of Louisville School of Medicine in Louisville, Ky. Most recently, Polu completed a fellowship in vascular neurology from Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, Ga.

“I am very excited to work with Dr. Walker and the entire Our Lady of the Lake team as we work to become a Comprehensive Stroke Center,” said Polu. “Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center and The NeuroMedical Center have made great strides in raising the level of stroke care in Louisiana and I hope to add value to that partnership.”

“In following with our mission to bring the best and brightest Neurosurgical and Neurological physicians to Louisiana, Dr. Polu brings the latest in stroke treatment to Baton Rouge,” said Benjamin J. Boudreaux, NMCC’s chief executive officer. “With Dr. Walker, Dr. Polu allows The NeuroMedical Center to provide of stroke trained neurologists to Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center 365 days a year. This ensures that every patient who comes to OLOLRMC with stroke-like symptoms will be seen by a stroke specialist at the correct time.”

Polu is board-certified in neurology and board-eligible in vascular neurology. He becomes NMCC’s ninth neurologist on staff.
