Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital celebrates one year since opening its state-of-the-art facility serving children across Louisiana. Oct. 5, 2019, at 6 a.m. marked a pivotal moment for the Franciscan Missionaries of Our Lady Health System, whose 107 year history includes nearly 75 years of advanced pediatric care delivered with expertise and compassion across Louisiana.
“Our Franciscan Sisters have a strong history of helping those most in need and what began years ago with a few pediatric beds at the original Our Lady of the Lake campus downtown has turned into a facility dedicated to advanced healthcare services for children of all ages,” said Trey Dunbar, MD, president of Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Health. “Over the first year, we've experienced many amazing moments and this is only the beginning.”
Since opening, Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital welcomed 10 new pediatric providers and cared for thousands of children from 63 of 64 Louisiana parishes. In addition to celebrating the hospital’s first Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter holidays with patients and their families, the Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital team also experienced a few other firsts:
-Oct. 5, 2019: Opening day with the first child arriving at the hospital at 6:07 a.m. On this day, 38 patients were transferred across the street from the former location at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center to the new facility. At 6:10 a.m., the Children’s Hospital saw its first patient in the emergency department.
-Oct. 6, 2019: One day after opening, Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital had its first transport patient arrive aboard the brand new Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Health Ambulance.
-Oct. 2019: Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital became a certified Level ll Pediatric Trauma Centers, the only program in southern Louisiana.
-Dec. 2019: The Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital’s attached medical office building opened allowing for numerous pediatric specialists to be located in a centralized place.
-Jan. 2020: Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital was selected as one of eight hospitals in the country to collaborate with Johns Hopkins’ PICU Up! program which promotes better mobility and positive outcomes for ICU patients.
-Jan. 2020: Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital joined Solutions for Patient Safety, a group of 100 pediatric institutions focused on improving quality for children.
-March 2020: Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Health opened Baton Rouge’s first pediatric otolaryngology program, more commonly known as ear, nose, and throat.
-April 2020: Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital launched a partnership with HALO called the ABCs of Sleep project which provides sleep sacks and education for parents to support safe sleep and SIDS prevention.
-May 2020: Construction began on Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital’s 11-bed, Level 3 surgical neonatal intensive care unit. The NICU is set to open later this fall.
-July 2020: Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital initiated daily operating room interdisciplinary care team huddles to improve efficiencies and quality in all areas of patient care.
-Sept. 2020: “Believe It, Achieve It” mobility campaign launched, promoting mobility for pediatric patients with chronic conditions. This is a partnership with Varsity Sports, Saucony, and GMFS Mortgage, and our physical therapy and nursing teams to cheer on our patients as they get up and get moving.
