Due to an abundance of caution and concerns over the recent surge of COVID-19 cases, Capital Area Human Services (CAHS) announced that its behavioral health clinics and offices will begin scheduling telehealth and telephone appointments through Jan. 28. In addition, walk-in appointments will also be suspended.   

According to CAHS Executive Director Jan Laughinghouse, “COVID-19 is affecting our clients, our staff, and their families, and these measures have been made for every person’s health and safety.”

Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center has added two new medical oncologists to its medical staff. Lauren Juneja, MD, and Sanjay Juneja, MD, have joined the practice and are available to see patients at Mary Bird Perkins locations in the Baton Rouge area.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has updated its recommendations for the Moderna booster, shortening the six-month interval between completing the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine series and receiving a booster dose to five months.

In 2021, for the first time, Louisiana had 242 organ donors who provided 763 organs to waiting transplant recipients. The number of donors increased 15% over last year, despite the challenges of a continuing pandemic and the devastation of Hurricane Ida.

There were also 479 people who donated tissue last year for use in procedures such as heart valve transplants for children born with congenital heart defects, skin grafts for burn victims, and a variety of orthopedic rehabilitation surgeries. One tissue donor can provide life-saving grafts for up to 75 individuals.

Paulette L. Grey Riveria, MD, has joined the Louisiana Department of Health as the regional medical director/administrator for the seven parishes of the Capital Region. Riveria is a board-certified family medicine physician who most recently served as a consultant to the Office of Public Health, conducting a novel statewide assessment of healthcare worker attitudes and experiences related to the COVID-19 pandemic.
