Our Lady of the Lake, The NeuroMedical Center Announce New Neuro Intensive Care Unit

Expanding on a 40-year partnership between Our Lady of the Lake and The NeuroMedical Center, the two healthcare organizations today announced a new 20-bed Neuro Intensive Care Unit located on the ninth floor of Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center.

“Nowhere in Louisiana are there more cutting-edge devices and procedures to help physicians treat neurological emergencies better and faster than at Our Lady of the Lake,” said Steven Gremillion, MD, chief medical officer at Our Lady of the Lake. “Through our unique partnership with The NeuroMedical Center, we are doing things in Baton Rouge not seen in the entire southeastern United States.”

The new dedicated Neuro Intensive Care Unit brings Baton Rouge to the leading-edge of stroke care in Louisiana, and expands the footprint as a destination center for comprehensive stroke and neurological care in Baton Rouge, the State of Louisiana and Southern Mississippi.

“We are now one step closer to our ultimate goal of transforming Baton Rouge into a destination center of care for neuroscience excellence,” said Gerald J. Calegan, MD, chief neurologist at The NeuroMedical Center. “This partnership is a win for both organizations and, most importantly, for patients who can receive the highest level of care for stroke and other neurological emergencies close to home.”

The new intensive care unit will combine all the necessary personnel, technology, and resources to help shave off critical minutes, even hours, in the triage, diagnosis and treatment of stroke and emergent neurological complications.

“There is no more time-sensitive treatment in all of medicine than that required when responding to neurological emergencies such as stroke,” said Gregory L. Fautheree, MD, endovascular neurosurgeon and president at The NeuroMedical Center Clinic. “Fast, efficient, and accurate treatment, as well as the proven excellence provided by the physicians, nurses, and all aspects of the treatment teams at Our Lady of the Lake, leads to better chances for successful outcomes. We are proud to be able to provide this level of advanced, coordinated care to the communities we serve.”

The Neuro Intensive Care Unit will be home to the latest in Neuro-Imaging Capabilities including Baton Rouge’s first state-of-the-art CT scanner and interventional suite. Additionally, the unit will allow physicians to continue groundbreaking procedures such as the minimally-invasive WEB® Aneurysm Embolization System and IRRAFLOW for Intraventricular Hemorrhagic Stroke, and offer the latest in stent technology (Atlas, LVIS) and image-guided tumor excision.

“This partnership between Our Lady of the Lake and The NeuroMedicalCenter will help transform Baton Rouge into a premier destination for neuroscience,” said Gov. John Bel Edwards. “This is a huge win for Our Lady of the Lake and The NeuroMedical Center, but the real beneficiaries are the people who will have increased access to cutting-edge neurological care close to home.”

“Our organizations are proud to play such an important part in bringing world-class healthcare to the residents of our community,” said K. Scott Wester, president and CEO of Our Lady of the Lake. “The future of healthcare in Baton Rouge is bright. Our entire community should be excited by announcements, such as the Neuro ICU, that expand access to state-of-the-art healthcare.”
