MBP-OLOL Cancer Center Project Earns Remodel/Renovation Award

Stantec Architecture’s work with Mary Bird Perkins - Our Lady of the Lake Cancer Center earned Healthcare Design magazine’s Readers’ Choice Award in the cancer care category. An assessment of existing cancer care services and in-depth analysis of patient experience opportunities became the basis for the thoughtful and deliberate renovation and expansion design project, helping advance the Cancer Center’s goal of becoming a destination for Gulf South cancer care.

“The Cancer Center’s devotion to design and its impact on the journey of its patients, families, and caregivers is the inspiration behind the renovation and expansion,” said Brenda Bush-Moline, project director and sector leader for Stantec’s United States east health sector. “We are beyond thrilled to be recognized for this award and to share the recognition with our visionary client.”

In conversations with stakeholders, the team found that existing services were interspersed throughout various buildings on the campus. After tracing the pathways of patients, it became clear that transforming the building based on patient preferences could greatly enhance experiences, and ultimately, the care provided. During this research, it was found that satisfiers such as convenience and accessibility, specialized symptom management, and a single point of contact for patients and advanced multidisciplinary care would all be required to ensure a successful Cancer Center redesign.

The new $25 million renovation and expansion focuses on a sense of ease and assurance during the treatment process, and supports healing with light, texture, and comfort. The human-centered design, which incorporated evidence-based design strategies, respects patient abilities, offers a dedicated and convenient entry and discharge process, and features many hospitality amenities such as a meditation room and respite areas. The design also includes courtyards and a front porch with natural elements and ceiling fans, aimed at creating familiar spaces rooted in the culture of Louisiana and designed specifically for this community.

“Stantec helped ensure we invested our resources in the most effective ways—ones that would enhance patients’ experiences—and it’s now all under one roof and inspired by our patients’ needs,” said Linda Lee, Cancer Center administrator. “We are so proud of our renovated and expanded facility, but I’m even more proud of the team and lifesaving services that happen within the walls of this beautiful space. It’s truly a product of many professionals collaborating, always with the patient as our focus.”

Healthcare Design serves an audience of architects, interior designers, hospital administrators, facility managers, engineers, and key members of the construction community as the premier source of insight, information, and inspiration for planning, designing, and constructing new or renovated healthcare facilities. The Readers’ Choice Award is presented annually to the project receiving the most votes from readers of the publication.
