Baton Rouge General’s New ‘Girl Talk’ Class Helps Prepare Young Girls for Adolescence

Adolescence includes a lot of changes for young girls, and sometimes their loved ones can use help preparing them for those changes. Baton Rouge General (BRG) makes it a little easier with a new class called Girl Talk, which covers issues like skin changes, hygiene, body development, first periods, and more.

Girl Talk is designed for girls between 9 and 11, accompanied by a parent or trusted adult. Taught by Baton Rouge General’s OB/GYNs, the classes are informal and interactive, allowing girls to work in groups and ask questions in a comfortable environment.

“It’s really important to talk to girls about the physical and emotional changes of puberty before they start happening,” said Dr. Taylar Childress, OB/GYN. “Knowing what to expect helps girls develop a healthy body image and feel confident about becoming a young woman. For some parents, it’s an uncomfortable topic, but we’re happy to help start the conversation.”

Upcoming dates for Girl Talk include Aug. 19, Sept. 16, Oct. 21, Nov. 18, and Dec. 16. Classes are $10, and participants can reserve a spot at brgeneral.org.  Participants will receive a canvas cosmetic bag filled with items discussed in the class.

The classes will be held on BRG’s Bluebonnet campus at 8585 Picardy Avenue, in Conference Rooms 1 and 2. For more information, call (225) 237-1606.
